Bakeries in Savannah: downtown, River Street and the Southside

Savannah’s bakeries split between downtown, where Cafe M and Goose Feathers sell pastries and baked goods in their cafes and Byrd Cookie Company runs four shops, and the Southside, where Byrd’s bakery and Two Smart Cookies are on Waters Avenue and White Bluff Road.

How we made this list. The places come from OpenStreetMap records inside Savannah’s city limits, the same data behind our local directory, checked against each place’s own website on Oct. 6, 2026. OpenStreetMap had few bakeries tagged inside the city, so we added Byrd Cookie Company, Two Smart Cookies, Cafe M and Goose Feathers Cafe & Bakery from their own sites, and we checked every address against the U.S. Census Bureau’s geocoder. We left out places we could not confirm: Back in the Day Bakery, whose site no longer loads a page; Auspicious Baking Co., whose site would not load; and the Panera Bread on Abercorn Street, whose location page blocked our check. Byrd Cookie Company dates to 1924, when Benjamin Tillman “Pop” Byrd Sr. began baking Scotch Oatmeal cookies at a small bakery near City Market and delivered them around town in a Model T Ford, according to its site. Its bakery and flagship store is now on Waters Avenue on the Southside, and it runs four shops downtown: on East Broughton Street, in City Market, on East River Street and at Plant Riverside District.

Cafe M is a French cafe on East Bay Street, steps above River Street. Its site lists French pastries, macarons, quiches, sandwiches, salads and soups, with takeout and delivery through ordering services.

Goose Feathers Cafe & Bakery has served Savannah since 1986, according to its site, with baked goods alongside breakfast and lunch in the Historic District on Barnard Street.

Two Smart Cookies is a cookie bakery on White Bluff Road on the Southside. Its site says it hand-crafts its cookies and treats and takes corporate orders.
