The City of Savannah picks up household garbage once a week, recycling every other week on the same day, and yard waste the day after. Carts must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day and back off the curb by 7 p.m. This page covers homes inside Savannah city limits; the city’s Solid Waste Department (called the Sanitation Department until this year) runs the service.

What day is my pickup?

The city mailed 2026 collection calendars the week of Dec. 15, 2025, one for each collection day. The collection schedules page has a digital copy of each calendar. Each calendar shows three things:

  • Garbage day: once a week, Monday through Friday, depending on your route.
  • Recycling weeks: every other garbage day, marked with a recycling symbol.
  • Yard waste day: the day after your garbage day.

If you did not get a calendar, call Solid Waste Customer Service at 912-651-6579.

The city’s residential refuse rules:

  • Carts out by 7 a.m. on collection day; take them in by 7 p.m.
  • Only household garbage goes in the city’s trash cart.
  • Leave at least 3 feet between your trash and recycling carts, and keep them 3 feet from mailboxes and other obstructions, as the calendar says.
  • Fees apply to garbage overflow, bulk items put out off schedule and yard waste in plastic bags.

Residents 65 and older who live with no one able to move a cart can apply to the Needs Assistance Program, which collects the cart from the back door. Call 912-651-6582.

Holiday schedule

When a city holiday falls on a collection day, pickup that week moves to a later day, including Saturday. The 2026 calendars show the moves for each route. The city holidays left this year:

Holiday Date Example from the Thursday route calendar
Veterans Day Wednesday, Nov. 11 Thursday garbage moves to Friday, Nov. 13; yard waste to Saturday, Nov. 14
Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26-27 Thursday garbage moves to Friday, Nov. 27; yard waste to Saturday, Nov. 28
Christmas Thursday and Friday, Dec. 24-25 Thursday garbage runs Thursday, Dec. 24; yard waste moves to Saturday, Dec. 26

Monday routes are not affected by these three holidays. For other days, check your own route’s 2026 calendar before you roll the cart out.

Recycling

Curbside recycling is collected every other week on your garbage day, and there is no charge for the service. To get a recycling cart, set up water service with the city’s Utility Services, then call 311. An extra recycling cart is $50.

Yes: hard plastics #1 to #7, glass, aluminum, tin and steel cans, paper, newspaper, magazines, junk mail, dry cardboard and milk and juice cartons.

No: plastic bags, Styrofoam, paint cans, clothing and bedding, toys and electronics, furniture and plastic chairs, yard waste and aluminum foil.

The city’s separate glass drop-off program was suspended in March 2024 when its vendor stopped operating. Glass bottles and jars go in the curbside recycling cart.

Single-stream drop-off sites for city residents:

  • Bacon Park Convenience Center, 6400 Skidaway Road
  • Capital Street Fire Station, 2235 Capital St.
  • Dean Forest Road Landfill, 1327 Dean Forest Road
  • Coffee Bluff Fire Station, 13710 Coffee Bluff Road

Yard waste

Yard waste is collected weekly, the day after garbage day. The rules from the 2026 calendar:

  • Leaves, grass and sticks go in brown biodegradable paper bags, or in your own cans no bigger than 32 gallons. Do not use the city’s garbage or recycling carts.
  • Limit of 15 bags a week; more than that, or yard waste in plastic bags, carries a fee.
  • Branches must be bundled: under 4 feet long, 12 inches or less across, 40 pounds or less, and quick for crews to remove.

Bulk items and tires

Bulk items are collected weekly on your garbage day, and you do not need to schedule them, according to the city’s bulk item guidelines.

  • Bulk means anything too big for the cart with the lid shut: furniture, mattresses and box springs, appliances, toilets, bicycles and metal.
  • Put items neatly at the curb with your cart before 7 a.m., away from mailboxes, fences and utility poles.
  • A pile that takes crews more than five minutes is charged a fee under the city’s revenue ordinance.
  • Never put bulk items in the street, a right of way or a median; the city treats that as illegal dumping. Report dumping to 311.
  • Tires: up to four at the curb on your collection day. A separate truck collects them, which can take up to a week.

The landfill and convenience center

Both take household loads from city residents with proof of residency, according to the Refuse Disposal Division. Neither takes commercial waste, including waste from managing rental property.

Site Address Hours
Dean Forest Road Landfill 1327 Dean Forest Road 7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 7 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Friday; 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Saturday
Bacon Park Convenience Center 6400 Skidaway Road 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday

The landfill takes garbage, recyclables, yard trash and extra household trash, and four tires a year. Bacon Park takes recyclables, yard trash and extra dry trash, but not garbage. Both close on city holidays; the landfill also closes Sundays. The city says Bacon Park will have new hours in 2027.
