Savannah police officers fired at a man who pointed a gun at them in the 800 block of East Gwinnett Street on Monday morning, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. No one was injured.
The Savannah Police Department asked the GBI to investigate. The bureau published its account on Tuesday in a press release.
What the GBI said happened
According to the GBI:
- A 911 call at about 11:44 a.m. Monday reported a man with a pistol outside his ex-girlfriend’s home.
- Officers arrived and found the man holding a gun.
- They told him to drop it. The GBI said he pointed the gun at the officers, and the officers shot at him.
- No one was hurt.
The GBI identified the man as Tyrel Javon Morgan, 47, of Savannah. He was arrested, charged with one count of aggravated assault and booked into the Chatham County jail, the bureau said.
An arrest or charge is an accusation. Every person is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in court.
What happens next
The GBI said it will conduct an independent investigation. When it is complete, the case file goes to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
The bureau did not say how many officers fired or how many shots were fired. It did not name the officers. The Savannah Police Department had not posted its own statement on its news page by Tuesday evening.
